“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them”
(1 Timothy 4:16)
The life to which we are called in and through Jesus Christ is a new life of reality, intent and purpose. It is a life of relationship with God our Father, with Jesus our Lord, our Saviour and our King, and with the Holy Spirit who comes to us as God within us. It may or may not involve a change in our everyday circumstances and relationships. Whether is does or not it will call for a change in our attitude towards them and in a change in our perception of our selves.
We are no longer one individual drifting alone on a sea of danger and uncertainty. We are very definitely, through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, sons and daughters of God the Father Himself. We have moved from uncertainty to certainty, from danger to safety, and from loneliness to companionship with regard to both our present and eternal future.
As the sons and daughters of God we need to look to living out our new identity in the ways indicated in the Gospels and letters. These will have the support and empowering of the Holy Spirit. Sports men and women elected to their national teams are given new clothes to wear that identify their status. They are expected to live up to the honour conferred upon them both publically and privately. As Christians we are not given new external clothes but are clothed with the salvation of our Lord and put on a new and Spirit blessed character.
- “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
- “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24)
Our role is to accept the salvation offered to us in Jesus Christ and to acknowledge and seek the change that flows from it. This change is a part of our new journey with the Lord as we allow Him to identify the old ways that are no longer suitable and the new ways that are now to be a part of our lives. It is an ongoing process that will bring regular insights and challenges. Sometimes the road will seem very difficult. This is not because the Lord has deserted us but because He is seeking to use circumstances in our lives to help us to grow as His children and in the awareness of His presence and love.
Acknowledge who you are in the Lord – Find the Scriptures that speak to your new way of life – Keep living for the Lord.
Lord God, please help me to put my complete trust in You and to live as Your very special child. When things get tough help me to hold on to You as You carry me through. Amen.
