“Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One.”

(Revelation 1:17-18)

Reflection:

This statement comes from the Lord Jesus Himself at the beginning of His revelation to John on Patmos.

‘Do not be afraid.’ How often has He said that before to His disciples. Such is the partial revelation now of His majesty and glory that it is overwhelming. Yet His first statement is aimed at dispelling fear and giving in its place the peace and the comfort of His awesome being and authority – which have now become our wonder, security and joy. For to us who believe He is not just ‘the Lord’. He is in addition ‘our Lord’. He is ours because He is for us and we are His because He has redeemed us. There is the marvel and security of belonging – and a joy that is and will be eternal. We will have all eternity in which to enjoy and celebrate this relationship with our glorious Lord, in the wonder of His never-ending love and the contemplation of beauty, glory and majesty such as we have never imagined.

‘I am the First and the Last.’ Before creation began He was and is. He was the expression of God’s desire, plan and purpose and is its fulfilment. He is the two hands of God within which everything has taken place and will still take place. Nothing can or will happen which is outside of His control and authority. And no one can pluck us from His hands.

‘I am the Living One.’ Apart from God there is no Living One – no one who is eternal Life, from whom all life flows and is sustained, and to whom all life will return. He is the Lord the giver of life – and His great gift to those who will receive it is the never-ending life of God’s children within His great love and light.

His Life has overcome death, His Light has overcome darkness, His Truth has overcome evil, and

“He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

(Isaiah 53:5)

Response:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer:

Thank You Jesus.
