“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

(Psalm 118:24)

Reflection:

It is wonderful to be able to greet the dawn of a new day with this acclamation on our lips. On the other hand it is good to remind ourselves that this is another day which is a gift to us from the Lord and, as such, should be appreciated.

However in the Psalm from which it comes there is a deeper and, for us, prophetic meaning. The preceding verses say,

“I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the LORD has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes.” (Psalm 118:21-23)

The stone the builders rejected is now seen to be the Lord Himself – and He has become the sure and unshakeable foundation on which the new temple of His people will be built with living stones. The rejected stone is the crucified Lord, and the foundation stone the resurrected Lord who is ascended to the right hand of the Father Almighty in glory. We are built upon and rest upon this great and eternal foundation and we live in the day of the Lord that extends from His resurrection until His coming again.

The dawn of each new day is but another moment in the ongoing day of the Lord. It is a time to remind ourselves that, as His disciples, we continue to live in His time, under His power and authority and within His sure and certain grasp from which no one can pluck us. We are His – this is His day and it will continue until His will and purpose is fully and finally accomplished on earth as in heaven. This day of the Lord is highlighted in our celebration of the Christian Sabbath as we remember and rejoice in the wonderful saving love revealed His the death and resurrection for us.

Each day is another wonderful and precious gift. For those who believe it is another opportunity to draw closer to the Lord, to live in the wonder of His presence and to celebrate His love. For those who do not believe it is one more opportunity to discover the Truth which is Jesus.

“I tell you, now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)

Response:

“The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation.”  (Psalm 118:14)

 Prayer:

“I love You, O Lord, my strength.” (Psalm 18:1)
