“the incomparable riches of His grace”
Grace has been described as “God’s free and unmerited favour – His undeserved, unsolicited and unconditional love.” Whilst that is true and helpful it does not convey the life and passion that is an essential part of it. For that most of Scripture is required – for the Bible is an account of the outpouring of God’s grace toward His creatures. It is a revelation of the God of love in action.
This grace is revealed from the majestic and intimate aspects of creation to the sovereign and personal gifts of salvation and eternal life, and the coming of both the Holy Spirit and the eternal King of kings. From the mighty acts of the Exodus, to the awesome whisper to Elijah, and the Word made flesh in the Christ, it is God and His grace from beginning to end.
God is revealed in His blazing Holiness, His absolute Power, His unimaginable Beauty, and His infinite and glorious Love. He is seen striding down the corridors of time, seeking and saving His beloved people, drawing them into the wonder of New Life, introducing them to His Light, Life and Love and filling them with His Eternal and Breath-taking Presence.
“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16-19)
To grasp, to know and to be filled speaks of a revelation and relationship which cannot be merely intellectual. It seeks from us a response that involves every part of our being – physical, mental, spiritual and emotional.
Grace is God’s provision for our need; His unlimited love filling our aching emptiness; His seeking and finding our lost-ness; forgiving and cleansing our sinful discolouration; removing and bearing our guilt; strengthening and helping our weakness; encouraging and lifting our fallenness; inhabiting and claiming our barrenness. God’s grace is God’s Love for us in action.
We do not fall in and out of His grace, as can happen in human relationships and situations of authority. Once having entered into His grace there is nothing in all creation that can “separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39)
Having become a part of Christ’s death by grace, so by grace we become a part of His resurrected life and are with Him in spirit at the right hand of the Father.
Our part is to believe and then to live in the Amazing Grace of our Wonderful God – The Father of Love, the Son of Salvation and the Spirit of New Life.
