Renewed Strength

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew [their] strength”

(Isaiah 40:31 – KJV)

God has been painting a wonderful picture of Himself through the prophet Isaiah.

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” (Isaiah 40:28-29 – NIV)

Now this same strong and tireless God promises renewed strength and vigour to His people when they attend to Him. The imagery is wonderful – ‘to soar on wings like eagles’, to run tirelessly and walk without limit.

What is it to wait upon the Lord? Firstly it is to serve Him and Him alone. Jesus warned about the impossibility of trying to serve two masters and the danger of the wrong one effectively became our priority. To wait upon the Lord also implies that we will always seek His commands and directions and set about obeying them – and not decide for ourselves what it is that He wants or does not want. Thirdly the call is to go forward with Him and at His pace, instead of rushing forward in a frenzy of activity and collapsing exhausted when we have tired ourselves out. Jesus spoke of us being yoked together with Him – in a yoke that is easy and with a burden that is light. It is He who bears the greater share of the load and who determines the direction and pace at which to proceed.

Jesus great calls to us, for our everyday lives, responsibilities, work and ministry are quite clear. ‘Come to Me;’ ‘Follow Me;’ ‘Remain in Me.’ It is a pattern with which we can live as we implement it every morning and throughout the day. As we do so we will find that He strengthens and empowers us for what He has in mind. What often tires us the most are the worries and the works that are not a part of His plans for us!

Ask God to show you what it is that He wants you to do – and what is not. Be faithful to Him in all that you do.

Lord Jesus, please help me to stay close to You, to allow You to direct me in the work and ministry of the day, and to equip and empower me with all that I need – for Your glory, Amen.
