“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”
(1 Peter 1:3)
Something remarkable happens in the life of those who are led to put their hope and faith in Jesus Christ. John expresses the wonder and truth of it at the beginning of his gospel.
“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God– children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12-13)
The effect of this new birth is to bring us into a new and living relationship with God Himself – with the Father of Love, the Son of Salvation and the Spirit of Life. Such is the power and wonder of this new relationship that it is as if we have woken from a long sleep, or have found that a new light has penetrated what we now see to have been the darkness that blinded and confused us.
All of this is the work of God in our lives. He is the one who has made it possible and who works within us to make it a personal reality. For some the realisation and appreciation of it is fairly rapid whilst for others it is a slower process. For all of us God takes us from where we are on a journey designed to lead us deeper and deeper into the wonder, truth and joy of His eternal love.
Wherever we happen to be on that journey at the beginning of this year we need to hold on to this great truth. As Christians we are the daughters and sons of the One Almighty God. His commitment and love are fully revealed in the Cross, His power and purpose made clear in the resurrection and His presence and work within us guaranteed by the Holy Spirit.
If the world seems to be drifting off into a trackless waste keep reminding yourself that we know the Way, the Truth and the Life – and press in closer to Him in prayer and trust.
Own your relationship with God and ask Him to make it a deeper reality in your life.
Father I do believe, please strengthen and give life to this belief throughout the year – drawing me closer to You so that You can draw closer to me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
