“you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house”
(1 Peter 2:5)
Jesus is the ‘chosen and precious cornerstone’ of the new spiritual temple of God. And now each believer becomes a part of what Eugene Petersen calls the ‘sanctuary vibrant with life.’
Firstly note that we are living stones and not dead fossils. Every part of the temple is alive with the life of God, built upon the One who is Himself ‘the Life.’ Every person contributes through the new life that they have in Christ and which includes worship and ministry.
Secondly we are built in relationship with both the Lord and others around us. We are part of a community in which there is a special and purposely planned place for us. If we refuse or neglect to take our place we leave a gap and isolate ourselves from the visible Body of Christ here. Not only are we impoverished but the local community is as well.
The heart of Christianity is relationship. Firstly there is our relationship with God, then our relationship with other Christians and finally our relationship with the world around us. We have been called out of the ‘solitary darkness’ into a fellowship of belonging. A solitary brick lying on the grass has little practical value. It fulfils its purpose when it is incorporated into a building.
Choose to (more) actively belong to a Christian community.
Lord You have called me to Yourself. Help me to take my proper place in Your Body where I can more fully give and receive Your love. Amen.
