“Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.”
Our lives are full of competing calls for our attention. Jesus speaks of the worries, riches and pleasures that crowd in and choke our spirits as they yearn for God. We may even discover that our greatest strengths can become our greatest weaknesses as we tend to rely increasingly upon what we think and what we can do instead of upon the guidance and empowerment of God.
If the seed that is the word of God is to prosper then the ground must be good. It must be prepared and then nurtured. Given the right conditions and care the word itself will begin to develop and increase within us and produce the abundant fruit that God has in mind. This comes when Christ is our focus, when we value and seek His word and then pray for the help of God to understand, believe and obey it.
As Jesus taught us
- “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
- “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
Beware of assuming that the ground of your life is open and receptive to God. Check yourself carefully – you may need to do some weeding to enable you to draw closer to Him. It will be worth it!
Prayerfully soak yourself in the Scriptures. Ask the Lord to open His Word to you and you to His Word.
Lord help me to have You as my main focus in all the areas of my life. Guide me, teach me and strengthen me as I seek to live and work in Your love. Amen.
