“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,
or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?”
The sheer size of the created order defies comprehension and understanding. The Milky Way is the galaxy containing our solar system. It is estimated to contain some 300 billion stars and is approximately 100 000 light years in diameter. That means that if we travelled at the speed of light – 300 000 kilometres per second – it would take us 100 000 years to get from one end to the other. The Milky Way is said to be one of billions of other galaxies.
One of the bigger stars is so enormous that its diameter of more than 300 million kilometres is over twice the distance from earth to the sun. So if the sun was at its centre the earth would revolve around it within the circumference of the star!
Isaiah tries to put the majesty, power and might of God in perspective by saying that He could hold all the waters of the earth in the hollow of His hand. Even greater, He could mark off the heavens – not just the Milky Way – with the breadth of His hand! In other words God constructed the entire universe as effortlessly as a skilled craftsman building a model on his workbench.
As Barry Webb writes, “The reason the gospel is so powerful is that it is no mere human invention; it emanates from the very throne of God. It is powerful because it is God’s gospel, and what a God He is!” Isaiah paints a breath-taking picture of Him. He is incomparably majestic, powerful, glorious and holy. He can do exactly as He wishes, how He wishes and when He wishes to whoever and whatever He wishes. And He has chosen to love us!
So when God says that
“so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11)
it is no idle boast but a statement that He can back up with the full power and authority that is His.
Truly, what a mighty God we are privileged to know, love and serve! And in Christ He died for us.
Think about Him
Lord God, open the eyes of my spirit, my heart and my mind that I may perceive more of Your wonder and glory and love. Amen.
