“Where there is no vision, the people perish”
When the Israelites reached the borders of the Promised Land for the first time they were intimidated by the reports brought back by the spies. They grumbled and complained, accused the Lord of bringing them from Egypt so that they could be slaughtered here, and suggested they choose another leader who would take them back to Egypt. God was incensed that they should have so easily forgotten His mighty works in bringing them thus far and that they did not trust Him to keep His promise to them. He sentenced them to another 40 years of desert life until almost all the adult men whom had come out of Egypt had died.
The nation had no real vision of God. They did not believe that God could or would handle the problem of the supposedly mighty enemy in front of them. What He had done in the past did not relate to their present. It raises for us the question of our own vision of God both as individuals and as the Church. It is particularly relevant in terms of current world events.
He is the Lord God Almighty, Creator of the heavens and the earth, of all that is seen and unseen. He is the One before Whom every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. He the God of limitless love, lavish grace and endless commitment. He is the One who suffered, died and rose again for my and your and our salvation. He is the Lord Who has promised to be with us always.
Scripture records God’s revelation of Himself to humankind. It contains also His teachings, directions and promises. His creation also speaks to us.
“But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being.” (Romans 1:19-20 ; MSG)
Develop your personal relationship with God through Scripture and Prayer. Take time to listen in both.
Lord God I long for and seek a closer and more trusting relationship with You. Please guide and help me and reveal Yourself to me more and more. Amen.
