“According to the will of our God and Father”

(Galatians 1:4)

Reflection:
Our salvation through the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ happened because God willed it and had it happen. It was purposed and planned before the creation of the world. And it was put into effect at what God knew to be the right time.

It is important to recognise that at the Cross there was a oneness in purpose and love of the Father and the Son. There was no force or manipulation at work. The Father willed it because it was the only way of true salvation in accordance with His eternal purpose. The Son affirmed and endorsed it fully when in Gethsemane He submitted to the will of the Father instead of surrendering to His then human weakness. Jesus ‘sacrificed Himself’ and it was ‘according to the will of our God and Father.’

This was the glorious and sacrificial love of God the Father and God the Son in its clearest and most riveting expression.

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
• “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Christ died as a sacrifice for sin, to rescue us from out of this present evil age and into the Kingdom age that He inaugurated. He did so in a visible expression of the complete harmony and perfect will of the Father and the Son.

Response:
Take time to ponder, absorb and appreciate God’s loving purpose.

Prayer:

Father, in the face of such love and commitment, how can I keep saying, ‘Not Your will but mine be done!” Please forgive me. Amen.
