What is Love?

Potter 1

“My command is this:
Love each other as I have loved you.”

(John 15:12)

Jesus gave this very special command to His disciples. It was the command that was to regulate the fellowship of believers who would shortly become the Body of Christ, the Church that bears His name. It was such an important command that He had said earlier,

“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  (John 13:35)

The love that He had in mind was, of course, the sacrificial love that He was about to demonstrate in His suffering and death. It would include all and every aspect of love. No one has put it better that Paul in his letter to the church in Corinth. Eugene Petersen has interpreted it as follows:

“Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.
Love never dies.”
(1 Corinthians 13: MSG)

For the child of God this is the vision to pray for and live out.

Father, please help me to live an everyday love in every situation and every relationship. In Jesus Name, Amen.
