wise men

“Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,
“Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?
We saw his star in the east
and have come to worship him.”

(Matthew 2:1-2)

Reflection:
Traditionally known as wise men, they had travelled a long way in search of ‘the one who has been born king of the Jews.’

It is remarkable to see the first response to the birth of Jesus and how it showed the hand of God. Shepherds of Israel joined by kings and wise men from the east; men of the simple outdoors joined by those who lived in fine houses and palaces; the poor and the rich; Jew and Gentile; coming in from the surrounding fields and far-distant lands – all travelling to seek not more knowledge or wealth or objects to acquire, but a Person, a very special Person, to worship.

Here were people who did not confine themselves to the knowledge and wisdom of the world, but who sought beyond that for someone who would be greater than all the wisdom that they had gained, someone ‘to worship.’ It is a great reminder to us that all the knowledge that we can accumulate will never answer all the questions, or satisfy the deep longings, that swirl within us.

We are created for relationships, in fact for a great and wonderful relationship that goes beyond anything the world can provide. This relationship of overwhelming love, cleansing light and refreshing life is so great that although it might not provide the understanding for which the world seeks it makes it unnecessary. We seek knowledge and wisdom because they leave us in control and lift us above our fellow human beings. We seek relationships because we desperately need to be loved and accepted, and to love in return. True love, God’s love, heals and inspires and gives us value – and will never be taken away. It is only Love that makes us real.

“Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.” (Isaiah 55:6)

Response:
Turn to God in prayer and ask Him to reveal Himself to you. Never stop in your journey towards Him. Press on trustingly, deeper and deeper, into this wonderful relationship.

Prayer:

Our Father… Your kingdom come … on earth as in heaven, Amen.
