I’m no longer yesterday

“For we are God’s workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus ”

(Ephesians 2:10)

We are not basically fairly decent people in whom God has overlooked a few small deficiencies, and ironed out a wrinkle or two, before admitting us into His Kingdom. Paul has spent the early part of this chapter describing a very different picture.

He has referred to us as being dead, enslaved and condemned. Separated from God because of our having rebelled against His laws and fallen short of His standards we were effectively dead. Enslaved by the ways of the world and our own passions and desires, we were effectively under the influence of the devil. Condemned by God’s holiness and His uncompromising condemnation of evil we had no future.

BUT GOD! After what could seem to be a depressing, humiliating and insulting three verses the next two suddenly explode upon the scene with a glorious brilliance and joy.

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4-5)

Although we were in reality dead God made us alive in Christ. And, although we were dishonoured and powerless slaves, God has liberated us and raised us to a place of enormous honour and privilege in Christ – seating us ‘with Him in the heavenly realms.’ And although we each stood condemned God has laid upon Christ the sentence and punishment that was our due. What we were by nature has been replaced by who we are by God’s grace. We are a new creation!

Change the mirror of your mind – see yourself as dead to sin and alive to God (Romans 6:11)

Prayer :

Father please help me to see myself as You now do – a precious new creation through Jesus Christ – and to live in the security of Your love. Amen.
