Words of Life

“the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

(Genesis 1:2)

In the darkness of the beginning the Spirit of God hovered over the waters, waiting. There is a sense of creative expectancy in the passage. The Spirit waited – and then God spoke, expressing His desire, and the Spirit received the Word and gave effect to God’s will. And ‘it was good’ in the sight of God.

“so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11)

The creative presence of the Holy Spirit is still with us today. He listens for the words that God may wish to speak into our lives – words of love and encouragement, forgiveness and healing as well as revelation and instruction. His desire and purpose is to bring them to a living completion. It is for us to open ourselves to the Spirit in prayer and to ask Him to reveal God’s will to us and to help us in it. And because it should always draw us closer to God we can pray with Paul,

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.” (Ephesians 1:17)

Give God space and quiet. Ask Him for direction in all the areas of your life. Practice listening. He will speak. Learn to recognise His voice.

Father whatever word you speak into my life will be good. Please help me to listen for You, to listen to You and to trust in Your great love. Amen.
