“do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart”

(Proverbs 3:1)

These words from Proverbs link us directly with the teaching of Jesus.

“If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.” (John 15:10)

It is a reminder to us that Scripture is not there just to be read – as one would read a novel and then pass on. It is there to be fed upon, chewed over, understood and taken into our lives and living – into the very heart of us. The Lord’s teaching is to be an essential part of our diet – something that we feed upon as indispensable to our life and living.

The intention is similar to that of the man crucified next to Jesus and who said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42). He was not asking that Jesus should recall having once known him but that Jesus should remember him in a way that made him present where Jesus was. Just so the teaching of the Lord should be with us always, informing and directing our lives. We must not fall into the trap of thinking that because we have read Scripture that we know it. We only know it when we are living it.

Jesus is both Saviour and Lord. He has saved us from sin and death into the eternal life of the sons and daughters of God. Having entrusted Him with our eternal lives we are called to trust Him with our earthly lives by living them in the way that He guides and directs us.

Read a Gospel – e.g Luke. Note the teaching that affects our daily living – both words to depend upon and word to obey. Take one a day – pray it and seek to live it through the day.

Lord Jesus You are the Living Word. May Your words live within me and guide and direct my life and living. Amen.
