Getting Prayer Right

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven”
(Matthew 6:10)

Reflection:
I was reminded recently of the deep implications of this prayer. In each and every situation it is God’s will that is important – and it is when His will is recognised and embraced that His Kingdom is established and extended.

We are encouraged by both the Lord Jesus and Paul to pray in all circumstances and not to give up.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

These are the most natural prayers – bringing our needs and requests to the Lord. However, if these form the majority of our prayers then, almost without our being aware of it, we may be praying for our will to be done instead of the Lord’s. Even seemingly good prayers may come from the unperceived base of our own comfort zones.

The structure of the Lord’s Prayer is so important. It begins by recognising and honouring God, praying for His kingdom (instead of our own or the world’s) and praying for His will to be done before we get anywhere near our own requests. Our own private prayers do need a similar format if they are to be pertinent and healthy.

It is also valuable to regularly take time in which to ask God what it is that He would like you to pray about – for yourself, those close to you, your daily work and the wider world in which you live, with its leaders. In doing so we are seeking to align ourselves with what He desires, and to wish for it ourselves – His good and perfect will on earth.

Response:
Take a moment now. Ask Him what He would like you to pray for yourself. Listen quietly and then pray for what you sense. Trust Him.

Prayer:

Father help me to seek Your will in my life and to pray it into reality. Amen.
