Knowing God

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the glorious Father,
may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation,
so that you may know him better.”
(Ephesians 1:17)

Reflection:
We can so easily forget that before anything else we are called into a relationship with God.

He has called us into the position of the highest privilege, that of His daughters and sons. He has allowed us to use the name of special intimacy, “Abba, Father.” His desire is to enjoy with us a oneness of spirit similar to that which He enjoys with Jesus – and so He has given us His Holy Spirit to be within us.

It is through the Holy Spirit that we receive, know and respond to God’s love – towards Him, ourselves and others.

“God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” (Romans 5:5)

It is primarily through His love that we come to know God, recognise and receive His grace, and turn to place our trust in Him. It opens our eyes to the astounding truth that God has been reaching out to us from the beginning, and at every moment of our lives – even when we have felt most isolated from Him.

Having experienced the wonder of God’s love, and this new relationship, for himself Paul is eager that no one misses out. And so he prays for the Ephesians this wonderful prayer that we can adapt for ourselves and for others. Like Paul we are encouraged to ‘keep asking.’ This is not only that we may get to know God better but that throughout our lives we may keep on deepening our knowledge of God, our relationship with Him and our love for Him.

Response:
Wherever you are with God there is so much more.

Prayer:

Glorious Father please give me the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that I may know You better, and better. Amen.
