The Soaring Eagle

Only your body is limited. Your spirit can 'mount up on wings like eagles'

Called by God

“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened
in order that you may know
the hope to which he has called you”
 (Ephesians 1:17-18)

God always calls us from something to something and for something. Paul makes this quite clear as he describes how God’s people have been chosen by Him and then called by Him. It was also vividly demonstrated by Jesus in His choosing and calling His first disciples who then became His apostles. In response to His call they left one way of life and followed Him into another for which He gifted and empowered them through the Holy Spirit.

God’s calling is rich and varied. We are called

  • To belong to Jesus Christ (Romans 1:6)
  • Into fellowship with Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:9)
  • To be saints (Romans 1:7)
  • To be holy (1 Corinthians 1:2)
  • To be holy in all we do (1 Peter 1:15-16)
  • Into freedom (Galatians 5:1)
  • To peace (Colossians 3:15)
  • To live a life worthy of our calling (Ephesians4:1-2)
  • To endure unjust suffering (1 Peter2:20-23)
  • Into God’s kingdom and glory (1 Thessalonians 2:12)
  • To His eternal glory in Christ (1 Peter 5:10)
  • Heavenward to receive the ‘prize’ (Philippians 3:14)

In summary we are called by God

  • To Christ and holiness
  • To freedom and peace
  • To suffering and glory
  • To an altogether new life in which we know, love, obey and serve Christ, enjoy fellowship with Him and with each other, and look beyond our present suffering to the glory which will one day be revealed. This is the hope to which God has called us. Paul prays that our eyes will be opened to know it.

This new journey is expected to include a developing freedom of our spirit by and through the Holy Spirit whom God has given to us as a guarantee – or first deposit – of every blessing that He has provided for us in Jesus Christ. The fact that they may not be visible in or to the world, in which we live for the time being, does not negate their truth and reality in our lives as we trust in the Lord.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in the heavenly realms
with every spiritual blessing in Christ”
(Ephesians 1:3)

Ask the Lord to give you a freedom in your spirit that will allow you to live out your calling.

Lord God set my spirit free by the Holy Spirit whom You have given to me, so that I may walk with You more closely and trustingly. Amen.
