The Work is Done

“Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God”
(Hebrews 10:11-12)

Reflection:
Jesus died and rose again – and then He ascended into heaven where He is seated at the right hand of God, the Almighty Father. Three truths are indicated.

Jesus Christ is resting. The priests of Israel offered sacrifices daily and never sat in the Temple for their work was never finished. However the work that Jesus took upon Himself has been completed as He signified with His great cry from the Cross and as God had indicated through the prophet.

  • “Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit” (John 19:30)
  • “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11)

Jesus Christ is reigning. He sits at the right hand of God in the place of supreme honour, majesty and power. All authority in heaven and upon earth is in His hands. From this place He sent the Holy Spirit to His disciples on the day of Pentecost. From here as the Head of His Body the Church He sends His people out into the world. And it was here at the right hand of God that Stephen saw Him during his trial by the religious leaders before they stoned him to death.

Jesus Christ is waiting – waiting for the fulfilment of the Father’s promise, and for the day of His return which day is known only to the Father.

  • “Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool” (Hebrews 10:13)
  • “The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” (Psalm 110:1)

As God rested when His work of creation was finished so the Lord Jesus rests now that His work of salvation has been completed. However just as God was not inactive neither is the Lord. He reigns and directs whilst He waits in anticipation of the day when His enemies will be no more and His Kingdom has come in all fullness and glory. This is our prayer firm in the knowledge that what God has decided will happen – and as His children we will be a part of it.

God is at rest. He is not anxious or striving frantically. He is secure in His supreme power and authority and is quietly fulfilling His plan and purpose in the time that He has decided.

Response:
Jesus Christ is alive – He reigns in the present – the future is secure – He will return.

Prayer:

Lord God, Hallowed be Your Name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Come Lord Jesus. Amen
