“Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
(Psalm 37:4)

Reflection:
When we choose to make God the most important person in our life, and one in whom we take delight, our lives will become more closely linked with His. As our thoughts and ways increasingly relate to Him we will find ourselves wishing to please Him and to want the things that He wants.

With our lives becoming more a part of His life the desires of our hearts will be more in tune with His and He will be enabled to delight us in return. We will find that often God has placed desires in our hearts and then moved to meet them.

God knows all the longings of our hearts – the good, the unhealthy and unhelpful ones, and those that are just fun and normal. He will be aware of what will fit in with His plans, what won’t, and which will not influence them one way or another. Because He loves us He will also bless us in ways that are purely personal – just as a father would look to delight his child in a special way. He will challenge us about the things that are not healthy or helpful and act as barriers to our relationship. As these are dealt with we create more space and opportunity for Him to develop and deepen our life with Him.

We do not love God and honour Him for what we can get out of Him. We love and delight in Him for Who He is and for what He is. This leads us to discover that, whatever else He might give to us, His love and His presence are all that we could desire and more than we might imagine.

Response:
Seek more of Him through Scripture, prayer and looking at His creation.

Prayer:

Father, I need help if I am going to delight in You like this. Please help me to know you better and to recognise and respond to Your promptings. Amen.
