The Soaring Eagle

Only your body is limited. Your spirit can 'mount up on wings like eagles'

“Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. “What you are about to do, do quickly,” Jesus told him. …
As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out.
And it was night”
(John 13:26-30)

Reflection:
John had asked You who it was that would betray You. This was Your response for You knew.

Then You gave to Judas a special gift of intimacy and love. Having first dipped the bread You handed it to Him – and he accepted it. You had called him into apostleship in the beginning and this was one more call to him. You reached out in love offering a last opportunity for him to change his mind and draw back from disaster.

But there was more. Shortly before You had washed his feet. Now symbolically You handed to him the bread which was to be so awesomely significant,

“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,
and gave it to them, saying,
“This is my body given for you”
(Luke 22:19)

Eternity waited in fearful anticipation. Then, with false heart, Judas took the bread but did not recognise the Master – and at that moment his real lord came to claim him. Knowing this You told him to leave and get on with his business. And in those terrible words with which John describes it, “He went out. And it was night.” A true and terrible darkness had entered into him and had fallen over the city and its people. How Your heart must have ached for him! He had been so close, but yet so very far from You.

All that remained was the pocket of Light that was You and those who were still with You. The awful unfolding of Your final hours was beginning – for You and for Judas.

“The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed,
but woe to that man who betrays him”
(Luke 22:22)

Lord Jesus protect me from the music of the night – flood me instead with the love-songs of the Light.
