“Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you”
God is a God of Love.
We spend a great deal of time focussed on our lives – on what to do, on what we need, on what we would like and on what we are feeling. We can become so preoccupied with ourselves that we miss out on what it is to truly love and on what it is to be loved.
Scripture dwells a lot on love – on loving God, on loving our neighbour, on loving one another and on loving our enemies. More significantly it focusses also on the love that God has for us. This love is far more than a four-letter word – it is something that we can know and receive and the depths of which are beyond reach.
David knew this love first-hand and described it as being ‘better than life.’ The awareness and experience of God’s love was such that nothing else in his life could compete with it.
Paul also knew this love and prayed that we too might begin to receive and experience it more and more.
“I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19)
This love has its source in God Himself and comes to us as a gift of the Holy Spirit.
“God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us” (Romans 5:5)
Our response, as the reality of God’s love becomes a part of our experience, is to both laugh with the utter joy of it and to turn to Him with expressions of wonder-filled praise on our lips – “my lips will glorify You.”
Ask the Lord to open your heart and spirit to the wonder of His love – and thank and praise Him for the little awareness that you have at the moment
Father please enlarge my heart and my spirit with the wonder of Your love – and may Your Spirit keep pouring it into me in never-ending streams. Bless me Lord so that Your love will also pour from me, into the lives and hearts of those around me. Amen.
