Choose Life

“Elijah went before the people and said,
“How long will you waver between two opinions?
If the LORD is God, follow him” …
“But the people said nothing”
(1 Kings 18:21)

This was Elijah’s great challenge to the people om Mount Carmel before dealing with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal. Like them we too have a choice which has been laid before us on a number of occasions, such as

  • “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
  • “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money” (Matthew 6:24)
  • “For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
  • “Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent” (John 6:29)

It is no good to say nothing. We have to decide with our words, and the way we try to live our lives, just where our focus and true commitment lie. God is not to be just the Lord of our misty tomorrows – He is vitally concerned with the reality of our todays. It is the todays to which the Lord refers when He says

  • “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28)
  • “Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14)

In the last quotation Jesus draws a clear comparison between the world and Himself. Whatever the world gives us will only cause us to thirst again and for more. What He gives us will not only satisfy our great thirst and longing but become also a source of blessing for others.

May people today are saying nothing and effectively trying to live with a foot in both camps. It does not work. We have to make a choice and commit ourselves to it – only we can do it.

Whom do I really follow?

Lord God, I do want to be Your fully committed follower and child. Please help me to make that a reality in my life and fill me with Your living water, love and peace. Amen.
