Absorbed into Life

“I am the resurrection and the life.
He who believes in me will live,

even though he dies”
(John 11:25)

Reflection:
I am the Resurrection and the Life – possibly the greatest statement that Jesus made about Himself.

He does not give a resurrection and new life to us as something separate from Himself – as with the gifts that we give to each other. Rather He invites and calls us into the Resurrection and Life that He has – that He is. As we surrender ourselves to Him and become united to Him He enters into us spiritually. We become a part of His Life – His eternal Life.

The illustration of the Vine is very relevant.  United to Him His life flows into and through us. Separated from Him we wither and die. Paul uses the illustration of a human body with Jesus as the Head and His followers as parts of the body – but it is His body. As long as we are under His authority we remain a part of His body.

Apart from Jesus there is no real life – only an existence. With Him there is a new and eternal life that commences now and is a part of His eternal Life and Lordship. So His great calls to people were “Come to Me;” Follow Me;” Abide with Me;” and “Open the door” to Me.

If we try to live our lives apart from Him we resemble a stagnant and evaporating pool of water in the rocks, occasionally refreshed by a passing shower or spray. After salvation it is as if the sea has flowed up and absorbed us into itself. We are there; we will even appear from time to time as a visible wave. However, in reality we are not a wave – with a separate identity – we are part of the mighty ocean. And as a wave always flows back into the sea so will we. In this case it is the Almighty and Eternal Christ, our Saviour and our Lord. And wherever that Ocean is, we are there also.

“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory”
(Colossians 3:3-4)

Response:
If I am a Christian then my heart and mind have to begin to accept and embrace the glorious truth and the spiritual reality. I am in Christ (Romans 8:1) and Christ is in me (Colossians 1:27)

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, please open my spirit to the Truth and help me to embrace it. I do believe, please help my unbelief, in Jesus name. Amen.
