Check your inheritance

“Now if we are children, then we are heirs
–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ”
(Romans 8:17)

As we saw yesterday Jesus is our Lord, our Saviour and our God. He is also our Shepherd – and our elder brother. Through faith in Him we become the (younger) daughters and sons of God.

This is an entirely new relationship with God – and it carries with it enormous privileges and blessings. Paul show us that we have now – as the children of God – become co-heirs with Jesus Christ our elder brother. That means that we become entitled to share in all and everything that belongs to God. Recall the words of the Father to the elder brother in the account of the Prodigal Son, after the younger brother had returned home.

“My son,’ the father said, `you are always with me,
and everything I have is yours”
(Luke 15:31)

If we understand this story properly we see that far from wishing to exclude His younger brother from any further inheritance the reality was that the Jesus telling the story had come to find the lost (sons and daughters) and was more than willing to share with them everything to which He was entitled.

That this was always a part of God’s pan and purpose we find too in Pauls letter to the church in Ephesus.

  • “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3)
  • “He predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will” (Ephesians 1:5)
  • “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance” (Ephesians 1:13-14)

It is no wonder then that the Scriptures teach us that

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him”
(1 Corinthians 2:9)

The beauty, fulfilment and joy that awaits us is beyond imagining

Lord keep me faithful and trusting in You that the passing pleasures of this world may not seduce me from all that You have in store for me. Amen.
