“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honour and glory and praise!”
(Revelation 5:12)
Reflection:
What is the real and great significance of the scars that are carried by the Risen Lord Jesus?
I believe that there are two reasons
Firstly – Throughout eternity they will remind us of the wonder of the love and glorious sacrifice of our great God and Saviour. They will the cause and focus of endless rejoicing and praise and worship amongst us and the heavenly host. We downplay the significance of the crucifixion if we believe it is anything less than an eternal and creation defining event. It could not possibly be lost or diminished in the endless mists of time. Only in the age to come will we begin to comprehend the horror of sin, the hopelessness of separation and the breath-taking wonder of salvation.
Secondly – Christ bears these scars because He sees them as the Highest Honour and Fullest Expression of His Being and His Love. For Him there has been and will be no greater privilege than to earn them on our behalf – the ones that He loves – and for the Father before whom He submits Himself in love. They are the fullest revelation of who and what He is. Forever He will be the Christ of the Cross – embracing the identities of the Suffering Servant and the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep. They are not blemishes on His heavenly body but dazzling revelations of His glory.
Response:
Contemplate the wounds of the Risen Lord. Allow them to begin to speak to you over time.
Prayer:
Open my eyes Lord that I may see, and believe, and begin to understand. Amen.
